Northland Community Choir is seeking its next Musical Director
Description: This is a part-time position leading and programming for a non-auditioned adult SATB ensemble.
About Us: Northland Community Choir is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, founded in 1974 and located in Parkville MO, committed to providing a place for people to come together to sing and to appreciate quality choral music. NCC is a choral ensemble whose members cultivate an environment of learning and growth in an atmosphere of sharing and acceptance. The choir’s purpose is to enrich the spirit, musical appreciation, and well-being of its members and the community-at-large by Making Music Matter.
We perform a diverse repertoire of secular and sacred music. Rehearsals have historically taken place on Mondays from 7 to 9 PM, with the season following the school year from September to May and consisting of larger concerts in the fall and spring, combined with smaller Christmas and Valentines concerts. This will be subject to some adaptation as we navigate the return from pandemic hiatus.
About Overview of Duties and Responsibilities of the Musical Director:
Lead the choir in weekly rehearsals, including any advance preparation needed to ensure productive rehearsals.
Work with the board to seek out accompanist candidates and participate in the selection process.
Prepare music for concert(s) and arrange order for performance in collaboration with the Board.
Direct the choir for choral performances as needed or required by the program.
Attend monthly Executive Board Meetings and any Music Committee meetings, as needed.
Promote the choir in the music community of the greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area. Advise and assist NCC leadership on methods to increase choir membership and concert attendance.
Foster a desire among choir members for musical excellence while maintaining a cooperative, friendly atmosphere.
Ensure that administrative functions vital to the choir’s performances (such as procuring music, scheduling facilities for rehearsals and concerts, etc.) have been arranged as required either directly or by the appropriate Board member.
Arrange for a competent substitute director and/or accompanist when unable to attend rehearsals. Compensation for substitute directors will be paid directly to the substitute by the Musical Director.
Maintain appropriate professional decorum at all rehearsals, performances and other times the choir is assembled.
About Required Experience and Skills: Experience conducting choir(s) comparable in scope to an adult SATB ensemble is required. A BA or advanced degree in music or music education is strongly preferred, though equivalent training or experience will be considered. An ability to teach and lead singers at a variety of skill and knowledge levels will be essential. Application Instructions: Please submit a CV or Resume via email to nccsings@gmail.com. Interviews will begin ASAP; local health guidelines permitting.
